At Nancy’s Barn, it’s not just food; it’s a taste of Donegal’s heart and home.

We’re on a mission to bring people together through honest, fresh food made with local pride and care. Every meal we serve is about creating moments of warmth, connection, and genuine hospitality so our customers leave feeling nourished, not just fed.

Our Story

From a humble beginnings to an award-winning Donegal favourite.

Nancy’s Barn has a rich history.

Many moons ago, what is now Nancy's Barn was a hay barn owned by the McLaughlin family. If you know anything about surnames in Donegal, you'll know there are LOTS of McLaughlins! It's not uncommon for people within a village to share the exact same name. For that reason, most families adopted nicknames. These McLaughlins were known as the 'Nancy's' - and so the building became known as 'Nancy's Barn'!

Our Ambitions

From these humble origins, we began with a simple dream: to create a warm, welcoming place where great food and genuine hospitality could come together in a setting as unique as Ballyliffin itself. What started as a small café in that old red barn has grown into something special, thanks to our loyal customers and a shared love for fresh, honest food. Our quirky barn setting and friendly team create an experience that feels like coming home, a place where visitors can slow down after exploring the Wild Atlantic Way, share stories, and enjoy authentic Donegal flavours.

Our Ethos and Awards

We believe food is more than just fuel, it's connection. Every dish we serve is made with care, using the best local ingredients from Donegal farmers and fishermen. Over the years, we've been honoured with recognition for our seafood chowder, including the title of World's Best Seafood Chowder. But what truly matters are the smiles and stories shared by every guest who walks through our door. This place is built on community and connection.

From a hay barn to the beloved destination we are today, Nancy's Barn remains that same friendly spot where people come to experience a true taste of Donegal and feel like family.

Meet Kieran

Kieran Doherty is the chef, storyteller, and lifelong Ballyliffin local behind Nancy’s Barn. Raised just up the road on the Isle of Doagh, he grew up dreaming of owning the old stone shed that would one day become his award-winning café. After training at Killybegs Catering College and sharpening his skills in hotels and kitchens across Ireland and the Channel Islands, Kieran returned home determined to create something special for his community.

In 2008, he made his childhood promise real and transformed the “craft shop” that caught his eye into Nancy’s Barn a place fuelled by fresh local produce, warm Donegal hospitality, and a serious passion for great food. With over 25 years’ experience and a World Champion Chowder title under his belt, Kieran continues to innovate, inspire, and welcome guests from near and far to taste the very best of Donegal.

I would say to my parents - “when I grow up, I want to buy that old shed.’
